In the Band - Groove & Solo
Working in a band, groove and improvisation, from beginner to intermediate
Service Description
A 4-Hour Band workshop Sunday 2nd June 13.30 - 17.30 St John’s Church, Redhill RH1 6QA Tutors Nikki Franklin: Piano / Vocals Steve Cooper: Bass / Guitar Mike 'Ozzy' Osborn: Drums If you want to learn to play or sing in a band you couldn’t get instruction from a more knowledgeable group of musicians. You will be guided through the fundamental building blocks of popular band repertoire, including common chord sequences and techniques for following the changes of a range of songs. Whether this is your first introduction to playing or singing with live musicians, or if you are at intermediate level and wish to extend your 'comping and improvisation skills, you will be supported in this group setting, making the workshop an interesting experience for all levels of ability. We will be exploring improvisation techniques based on groove, scales, call and response with some classic riffs and licks, and for pianists, a range of left hand accompaniment patterns. In this session we will be developing band repertoire, learning chords and soloing for instrumentalists and with a focus on the role of singers in the band for vocalists, including harmonising, percussion techniques and guidance on leading a band. Please bring your own instruments if you have them. We will have a piano and a couple of keyboards available, but if you have your own instrument, please bring this with you. If you cannot bring an instrument, please contact me and I will arrange something for you. Vocalists, if you have a mic and amp you are welcome to bring them, but this is not a requirement. Beginners Absolutely Welcome! Even if you are new to learning your instrument, you are welcome to join us - pianists can use RH only if preferred, and vocalists will do some work in unison groups for those who do not wish to sing on their own. You will be given learning material but it might be wise to bring a pen and paper. We will take a couple of breaks during the workshop. We do not provide refreshments but there are tea and coffee making facilities at the church. After the workshop, you are invited to join us for a drink at the Plough Pub, St Johns, Earlswood n.b. Places are limited and will be available on a first come first served basis
